Growing up, my dad built spec homes on the side. That meant summers sometimes came with a job I hadn't applied for: being his laborer.
I loved the smell of fresh lumber. The summer labor? Less so. Part of the reason I started playing football was to give myself an escape from working on those houses.
As I grew older, my appreciation changed. I began to love the entire process: the planning, the craftsmanship, the coordination, and watching an empty lot become a home.
